Blended Learning

Five years ago Stuart, one of our directors, was involved in discussions with the HSE on how eLearning in first aid would work. The group (a precursor to the First Aid Quality Partnership) set a standard of ⅓ eLearning and ⅔ practical.

We have therefore been using eLearning for several years to run Blended courses with one day eLearning and two days of practical skills. Our clients include some major organisations and Universities, who love the flexibility this gives them.

Flipped Learning

During COVID we expanded our blended eLearning system to cover much more theory than before. This gave us the ability to run courses for 12 students in a ‘COVID-safe’ manner: Students completed the course theory online and then attended a classroom day in groups of 6 to undertake the practical skills. Therefore we were able to train 12 students safely, to a very high standard.

Having run these courses for over 12 months, we now know that it is perfectly possible to train groups of 12 students using this method. In addition, we can safely say that our students love them and really appreciate the flexibility it gives them to schedule their time around work. Employers likewise appreciate not having to have a group of 12 staff all away from their workplace for 2-3 days.

Our eLearning System

eLearning

Our course is, what as known as "Flipped Learning". That is, that students study the theory themselves first and then attend a day with an instructor to put what they have learnt into practice.

Accessible

We do our best to cater to everyone, including those with disabilities, such as dyslexia, visual problems and hearing loss.

There are options to change the website's fonts, colours and text size and all of our videos are subtitled, or have a transcript.

We try to keep the English as simple as possible as we know many of our students are not native speakers.

Modular

Our courses are modular in structure so each student only completes the modules that are relevant to them.

Fun

Our students say that they enjoy the eLearning. It is fun, informative and low stress.

Schedule

Students can complete the eLearning in their own time. The system saves their progress and they can just pick up where they left off.

Interactive

Our eLearning is also fully interactive using video, cartoons, interactive lessons, text and pictures. This gives plenty of variety for all types of learner. If a student gets a question wrong they are not just sent back to ‘try again’, but told why they got it wrong, and given more information, often in a different way.

Certificate

Certification is all done online. Once learners have completed the practical day, they are able to access the final exam. Once complete, a certificate is sent via email. This has a code which can be verified online.

Learner Comments

"Brilliant online material, videos and animated videos!”

“I enjoyed the course and found it very useful. I liked having the flexible time to complete the online elements of the course and thought the in-person aspect was well delivered with plenty of time to practice the practical skills with lots of instructor supervision.”

"The eLearning gives time to understand the concepts at your own pace, and you can do it when you have time. It is easy to look up things if you don't fully understand them, or go through the material again. Once you understand the theory, the practical aspect can be done with much more confidence, as you already know more or less how it should go. I could concentrate well on the practical side of First Aid because I already knew the theory."
